What is Native American Youthsummer?
A career exploration
camp at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for Native American students in grades 6-10 from the Bad
River, Red Cliff and Lac Court Oreilles areas.
What can you do there?
Explore
careers in the arts, sciences and computers.
Meet
professionals in various career
fields.
What does it cost?
There is NO
COST to you to attend Native American Youthsummer. Food and
housing are provided. This program is funded by the Wisconsin Department
of Public Instruction.
Join us for Native American Youthsummer!
Have
fun while learning:
Explore the world of computers, art and the sciences while having fun at the
same time! At Native American Youthsummer (NAYS), you learn about career
areas through field trips, hands-on experience and classroom
discussion.

Plenty
of field trips: You won’t
sit in the classroom all day! An activity is planned every day to give you a
chance to see the relationship between what you learn in class and how it’s
used in the real world. You take field trips to various occupation sites (click on "Plenty of Feild Trips" and see list
of activities are confirmed for this years program). You may work in the
computer lab or conduct experiments.

No grades or tests:
The atmosphere at Native American Youthsummer program
is relaxed. There are NO tests or grades.
Getting to Superior:
UW-Superior picks up students the day before the
program starts from central locations in Ashland, Bayfield and Hayward.
Students live in a residence hall on campus. Food is provided. Once the
program has finished, the University brings the students back home
to Ashland, Bayfield and Hayward.
How to Register
1) Request an
application packet:

2) Fill out the forms:
You will receive a packet including
the following forms which must be completed to be considered for the program:
application, essay by student, letter of recommendation from guidance counselor/teacher,
completed DPI form, and copy of recent report card.
3) Mail your completed application
to:

Your forms must be completed and
returned to our office by April 19, 2003.
The NAYS director and project coordinator
will screen all applications. Students who are chosen to attend will be
notified by letter by April 26, 2002. Those not chosen will be put on a
waiting list.
Native American Youthsummer can only
accept 14 students. Criteria for acceptance is based on completion of all
paperwork and desire to be in the program.
