UW-Superior Professor Stewart Presents At An International Logistics Conference

Dr. Richard D. Stewart, Associate Professor of Transportation and Logistics in the Department of Business and Economics at the University of Wisconsin Superior gave a presentation at the TRANS-LOG 2000 conference held at New Orleans in August 2000. This is the 35th annual conference and exposition sponsored by the International Society of Logistics, (SOLE). The organization was founded in 1966 as the Society of Logistics Engineers "to engage in educational, scientific, and literary endeavors to advance the art of logistics technology and management." There are over 90 SOLE chapters in more than 50 countries throughout the world. Chapters conduct technical meetings, symposia, and work- shops all designed to provide the SOLE member with opportunities for professional advancement. Chapters and districts also sponsor regional technical meetings.

The three-day conference hosts ten panels presenting and discussing relevant logistics topics and Dr. Stewart is on the Government Industry Partnership Panel. Professor Stewart's presentation was a 'Holistic Approach to Transportation and Logistics Education.' His presentation discussed how a joint effort by government and business led to UW- Superior's creation of a baccalaureate in Transportation and Logistics Management. The paper presented how the U. S. Department of Labor's Title III grant to UW-Superior is being used to train incumbent workers in the transportation and logistics industry. Finally the presentation outlined how Superior Senior High School, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and UW-Superior will develop a pilot program to teach transportation and logistics to high school students. The joint pilot program is funded by a grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation with support  from area businesses and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Dr. Stewart's attendance at the International Conference was partially under-written by a grant from the UW-Superior Foundation.
