A brief career description of Pharmacy

Pharmacists are members of comprehensive health care teams in which health care professionals work together for the benefit of the patient. The pharmacist traditionally has been concerned with the composition of drugs and dosage forms, their chemical and physical properties, tests for purity and potency, methods of preparation, and proper medicinal usages. Today's pharmacist carries the responsibility of providing drug information to other health professionals and the lay public. Expanding roles in health care delivery offer broader horizons for involvement in drug therapy. The pharmacist provides general health information to the community and plays a vital role as drug counselor to the patient. Often, the ultimate success of drug therapy depends upon how ell patients understand and follow their drug regimens.

Pharmacy offers many career opportunities in community, hospitals and long-term care pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmacy education, and government and social service agencies. Tomorrow's pharmacists may serve also in other, nontraditional, roles to increase the availability and quality of health care.
