Did you know that UW-Superior offers a German Study Abroad Program for credit? You can gain first-hand, experiential knowledge of German language and culture during a semester of formal study at the Carl von Ossietzky University in the beautiful city of Oldenburg, Germany.
University housing is available, as well as government-subsidized meals in the Mensa. Student aid is available to those who qualify, and each participant will be provided with a “cultural buddy” who will introduce you to the city, university, and German student life during your stay.
The Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg has approximately 13,000 students. The campus features a new library, a sports center, a student cafeteria (Mensa), and the finest new university architectural complexes for the Natural Sciences in Germany.
The university in Oldenburg bears the name of a famous German journalist and pacifist who was arrested by the Nazis in 1933 because of his courageous stand for peace and democracy. Carl von Ossietzky was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935 after international pressure led to his release from the concentration camps.
The city of Oldenburg is located in the state of Lower Saxony, about 30 miles northwest of Bremen and 130 miles from Hamburg. The city has approximately 150,000 inhabitants, and possesses extensive public parks and cultural facilities, including the Augusteum Art Museum, and the State Museum for Natural History. Oldenburg is situated close to both Lake Zwischenahn and the North Sea; the beautiful East Frisian Islands, the so-called Seven Daughters of the Sea, are easily accessible.
Normally, a student must complete German 242 and at least one 300-level German course at UW-Superior before participating in this program. The wide variety of courses available in Oldenburg allows those students already minoring in German the opportunity to pursue an Individually Designed Major in German.
