Established in 1991, the Superior/Douglas County Leadership Program is an annual program for approximately 25-30 emerging and existing leaders who want to be involved in improving the community and shaping its future. Participants represent a cross-section of the urban and rural communities of Douglas County and have diverse backgrounds and interests.

Selected on an annual basis, the participants broaden their knowledge of the community, develop networks among existing and future leaders, and learn skills needed to meet the challenges faced by the community.

All of the topics in the program are designed around issues which are relevant to the Northland in the twenty-first century and beyond. Starting in September, the ten-month program includes a two-day retreat during the fall and nine full-day sessions. Sessions are interactive and allow participants to become involved through a combination of small group and panel discussions, special projects, informational tours, and presentations by experts in their fields. Topics include:

  • Growth Management
  • History of Superior/Douglas County
  • Douglas County Nonprofits/Communication, Media, & Public Speaking
  • Local Government & the Public Policy
  • Business & Economic Development
  • Public Education
  • Health & Human Services
  • The Superior/Douglas County Courts & Law Enforcement
  • Personal Goal Setting

Cost for the program is $550, payable by the individual, the employer, or sponsoring organization. A limited number of partial scholarships are available.

Candidates may be nominated by themselves, an employer or another interested party.
