Online Courses | Print-based Courses | Special Topics

There are two different options for taking courses through the Distance Learning Center: print-based courses and online courses.

1.  DLC Online Courses

You must be able to:

  • Navigate the Internet with ease.

  • Use e-mail, which includes how to attach a file to an e-mail message.

  • Do a search on the web.

  • Be proficient in using word processing software.

You must follow these instructions to access online courses or course manuals/syllabi:

2.  DLC Print-based Courses

Instructors have identified the competencies or learning outcomes to be attained for each course.  Though the methods may vary from the on-campus version, the learning outcomes are the same.  Print-based courses are offered in the following ways:

A.    Courses with a manual

The instructor has developed a manual, which takes you step-by-step through the course.  After you have enrolled, the manual will be available for you in the Learn@UW site one week before the start of the term.

B.    Courses with a syllabus

The instructor has a syllabus to follow.  You may access it in the Learn@UW site after you have enrolled in the course. The syllabus identifies the learning outcomes, which are the same as the outcomes for the on campus course, the method of study to be used to achieve the outcomes, and the evaluation processes to be used.

C. Special Topics

Another method of completing course work is what is known as “Special Topics” or special interest areas.  You may prefer learning experiences that are not available in existing courses discussed above.  This option for completing course work requires that you meet with an instructor and negotiate the outcomes and the method of evaluation that will be used to determine that the outcomes have been achieved.  You must have permission from the instructor before enrolling in this type of course.
