About Us

The Distance Learning Program is a degree completion program.  To be admitted, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits that include the math and English requirements for general education.   To complete any of the majors described below requires Internet access (a high-speed connection is highly recommended). 

Distance Learning students earn a Bachelor of Science degree. The three options for majors at a distance are:

1. The Individually Designed majorThis major allows the student to plan a major to meet her or his educational, career or personal goals. Career and family commitments or distances from the campus are not barriers to completing the degree. The degree consists of:

General Education Requirements
Major Credits
Elective Credits

Other requirements of the degree with an individually designed major:

  •  A total of 120 or more semester credits
  • 36 or more credits in upper division courses (i.e., courses numbered 300-499)
  • A resident grade point average of 2.0 or above for all undergraduate courses
  • 30 or more semester credits earned through UW-Superior
  • The last 12 credits earned through UW-Superior
  • Completion of the General Education requirements (core courses, non-western and diversity requirement, knowledge categories, and co-requisites
  • Completion of the requirements for the individually designed major

2. The Elementary Education major

The degree for the student who plans to complete elementary education certification will consist of:

  • General Education Requirements for Elementary Education
  • Elementary Education Major
  • Teaching Minor Requirements
  • Co-requisite Requirements
  • Admission to the Teacher Education Program
  • A minimum of 121.5 to 141 credits

    Note: Elementary education certification is provided only for Wisconsin and Minnesota residents. Minnesota residents need to contact the Minnesota Department of Education for current licensing requirements. Please note that most of the courses required for elementary education certification are available; however, students may be required to complete some courses on-campus.)

3. The  Communicating Arts major

The Communicating Arts department offers a Communications major to distance learners. The major consists of 33 credits and will appeal to those students who are interested in focusing their degree in communications.

Other requirements of the degree with a Communicating Arts major:

  •  A total of 120 or more semester credits
  • 36 or more credits in upper division courses (i.e., courses numbered 300-499)
