South Campus

Quick Time Virtual Reality

Visitor Parking
A parking lot with this star icon in it signifies a lot in which visitor parking is allowed. A visitor parking permit is required.


Barstow Hall
Barstow Hall houses classrooms, labs and faculty offices for the Biology and Chemistry programs as well as offices and some labs for the Lake Superior Research Institute.

Crownhart Hall
Crownhart Hall is a women's residence. It's just across the street from Rothwell Student Center. A Duluth Transit Authority bus stop is located in front of the building. Residents find all the comforts of home here, plus a few more. A computer room provides access to personal computers linked to the University network. Students can keep in shape using the aerobics room and exercise area, relax using one of the pianos in the piano room, check out a VCR or get a pizza at the front desk.

Curran, McNeill & Ostrander Halls
Curran-McNeill and Ostrander halls are the university's main housing complex. They share a common lobby and lounge area. All the residence halls have laundry rooms, vending and change machines, computer rooms linked to the campus network, exercise equipment, kitchens, VCR rental, parking areas and pizza sales at the front desk. CMO also has a pool table for student use. In addition, rooms in Ostrander Hall are wired to allow cable TV in each room as well as two computer hook-ups to the campus network. Students with personal computers in these rooms have full access to the Internet, University library resources and other research tools.

Campus Welcome Center
The Campus Welcome Center is located at Catlin Avenue and Belknap Street. This Superior landmark was preserved and given a new life as a convenient entry point to our campus. The Welcome Center is the first stop for visitors unfamiliar with the campus. A stop here will provide directions to campus buildings or the location of metered parking spaces, as well as guest parking permits and other important information. Back to top
Erlanson Hall
Erlanson Hall dates to 1916 but it's been totally renovated in recent years. It contains classrooms, computer rooms and faculty offices for the business programs.

Holden Fine Arts Center
Holden Fine Arts Center contains everything needed by students enrolled in the Art, Music and Communicating Arts programs. The building is packed with art studios, practice rooms, a recital hall, two theaters, two art galleries and numerous classrooms. It's a great place to get hands-on experience. Art students work in studios for ceramics, fibers, metals, painting, photography, sculpture or printmaking. Two galleries provide a place to display student work. Theatre majors build their résumés by working on stage and behind the scenes in the main stage and experimental theaters. An extensive set-building workshop allows unlimited use of the imagination when preparing for a performance. Musicians and vocalists get plenty of opportunity to perform in the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Symphonic Band, University Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Ensembles. Holden contains a recital hall and ample practice space, including rooms equipped with pianos, keyboards and pipe organs. Holden also contains a TV studio and the studios of KUWS, a Wisconsin Public Radio affiliate the employs many students.

Gates Field House
Gates Physical Education Building houses UW-Superior's athletic, physical education and health programs. Inside is a gymnasium with seats for 3,000 spectators, a six-lane track and a swimming pool. It also has classrooms, dance studios, fitness room and a weight room. Gates is a busy place. Students go here to watch the Yellowjacket basketball and volleyball teams or to use the pool, fitness room, weight room and track. Intramural teams play here, too. Students in the Corporate and Community Health program and those enrolled in various physical education programs frequently use the facilities and equipment in Gates.

Jim Dan Hill Library
Jim Dan Hill Library is named for an early and influential president of UW-Superior. He believed deeply in the value of knowledge and learning. Today, his namesake is the center of information on campus. JDH Library houses more than 300,000 volumes and 1,000 magazines and journals. Online database searching is available, and students can use computers to access other libraries in the University of Wisconsin System. A computer lab offers handy access to the campus network while the Curriculum Development Center offers classroom and computer lab access to the latest computer hardware and software.

McCaskill Hall
McCaskill Hall houses classrooms and offices for the teacher education, counseling and educational administration programs. The COPE Center gives teacher education students access to computers and other resources as well as a place to gather and share their experiences. The building also houses several science labs, Kathryn Ohman Theater, the Media Resource Center and an Interactive Distance Education classroom. A greenhouse is attached to the building.

Old Main
Centerpiece of the UW-Superior campus is Old Main. It is the largest and oldest building on campus, dating to 1914. Renovation projects over the years have kept it current with the University's needs. Inside Old Main, you'll find the University's main administrative offices, including admissions, financial aid, student records, the chancellor's office and the business office. Old Main also contains classrooms and a large, newly remodeled computer lab.

Ross Hall
Most residents of Ross Hall live on the building's third floor. The second floor offers family housing, and the first floor is for guests and residents with disabilities. Ross Hall is located five blocks south of the main campus and features plenty of parking. One wing includes six two-room and one three-room suite. The hall also has a computer room, kitchen and front desk services.

Rothwell Student Center
Rothwell Student Center is the meeting place for students, their families and guests. It includes a cafeteria and snack bar, student lounge and study area, meeting rooms, offices for student organizations, pool tables, video and pinball games, a television lounge and a ballroom. Rothwell also contains the bookstore, an ATM and bank, a fax machine available for student use, a computer lab and an art exhibit area. Students can even check out canoes, tents, snowshoes, basketballs and other outdoor and sporting gear in the Outdoor Recreation office.

Wessman Arena
Wessman Arena, located on the University's south campus, is home to the Yellowjacket hockey team. Beginning in the fall of 1998, it becomes home ice to the new Yellowjacket women's hockey team. The ice sheet also is open to students for free skating as well as intramural sports and physical education classes. Other nearby athletic facilities include a newly refurbished all-weather track and a baseball field.
