Classes Taught:
TED 487/687: Introduction to Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (3 credits)
Introductory course in teaching learners with emotional/behavioral disabilities. Topics
include: theoretical and historical perspectives; family, classroom, cultural and gender
issues; screening, pre-referral and referral processes; teaching and behavior
management strategies. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Programs.
TED 493/693: Behavior Management Strategies for the Classroom (3 credits)
Behavior theories, strategies and programs are covered. Emphasis is on how
these apply to the academic and behavioral development of schoolchildren,
especially those with exceptional educational needs. Attention is also given
to working with parents and teachers, to social skills training, to
disciplinary models and to functional behavior analysis. Prerequisite:
Admission to the Teacher Education Programs.
TED 495: Methods of Adaptive Instruction (3 credits)
Methods, strategies, and materials for adapting curricula to meet the
learning needs of students with exceptional needs. Ability to make modifications
and adaptations throughout and across curricula and research-based teaching strategies
are emphasized. Prerequisites: TED 488 and at least two of the following: TED 487, 491,
or 492.
TED 496: Practicum in Special Education (3 credits)
A student seminar will meet regularly for study and discussion. The course
includes field experience in the schools with students who have cognitive disabilities,
learning disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disabilities. The course must be taken at
a time when students will have 30 hours available for field experience. Pass/Fail.
Prerequisite: TED 495.
TED 711: Diagnostic and Remedial Mathematics (2 credits)
Examines diagnostic procedures and remedial techniques appropriate to
providing instruction to students having difficulty learning mathematics.
Emphasis on designing individual/small group plans.
TED 752: Educational Research Project (2-3 credits)
Students design and carry out a research project with the advice and
approval of the advisor and special area consultant. Upon completion and approval
of the research project by the advisor and consultant, the student gives an oral presentation
of the paper to faculty and students. Prerequisite: Advisor approval.
TED 767: Assessment of Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (3 credits)
Develops competencies in assessment and identification of students with emotional and/or
behavioral disabilities. Preparation for developing IEP’s, including transition, and in
communicating assessment information to others. Prerequisite: TED 687.
TED 768: Practicum: Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (3 credits)
Field-based experience in teaching students with emotional/behavior disabilities
in both the elementary and secondary grades in approved placements with qualified on-site
supervisors certified in this area. A student seminar meets regularly
for study and discussion. Pass/Fail. Prerequisites: a minimum of 18 credit hours
of graduate work toward M.S.E.-Special Education degree including TED 687, 767, 770,
and 771. Note that TED 771 is incorporated into TED 770 effective Fall 2002.
